Here I will let you know all the useful information which I normaly ask to clients prior to work.
Briefly describe what you are requesting.
Be sure to mention if you want mastering, stem mastering, restoration, dialogue or podcast editing as well as how are you planning to release your project -being typical Digital, Vinyl, CD or Cassette- and in case of Digital release format if you need different versions of the deliverables for the popular streaming services*.
Apart from that it is always helpful to have a conversation or at least know your thoughts and expectations and of course how you want your music to sound, for example transparent, clean, dynamic, dense, punchy, loud, bright, dark, saturated, etc. If you have some other artists you love and like to get into that sound territory share it with me too.
*More and more often there are platforms that accept high quality deliverables beyond the typical CD quality of 44.100 Hz at 16-bit so I can deliver higher resolution files if needed.
Not all platforms will accept that so 44.100 24-bit and 16-bit Wav files are usually enough.
How to submit your files.
You send me a compressed Zip -or Rar- file via Dropbox, Google Drive, WeTransfer or any other cloud storage or file sharing service.
You can also come with an USB drive properly formatted for macOS if you prefer.
Then, follow these guidelines to get the best quality files possible:
- Do a final listening and pay special attention to details like noises, cracks, level clippings, distortion and any other unwanted artifacts.
- Leave a silence gap at the beginning and end of each track to avoid abrupt cuts. This also will help to analyze the noise profile in case there is some present.
- If you have fade-in and/or fade-out leave also some silence in the tails. I can also do the fades in the mastering process at best quality.
-
Remove -or bypass- any plugin in your master channel like compressors and limiters or any other mastering tools.
If you or your mixing engineer work with plugins in the master bus it is always great to have both versions: one with master fx and other without. -
Export your files as WAV || AIFF - 16/24/32-bit - 44.1 kHz || 48kHz || 88.2kHz || 96kHz || 192kHz.
I can work with lower resolutions and with lossy formats if no other option is available but it is highly discouraged. - Be sure to render files with enough headroom. If you are unsure, a general practice is to have the program levels peaking at maximum -3 dB.
-
Label each file clearly enough, specifying version number as well as format and following the final playlist order -of course this can be changed later-, for example:
1-Song-Title-V1-96k-24bit.wav
2-Song-Title-V1-96k-24bit.wav
...
In the case of Vinyl or Cassette include also the side where it belongs:
A1-Song-Title-V1-48k_24bit.wav
B1-Song-Title-V1-48k_24bit.wav
... -
Label the final compressed Zip folder like: ArtistName-ProjectTitle.zip
Include any extra information like track references -can be MP3- or file texts with comments, spreadsheets with ISRC codes, record label information, rights owners and authorship, etc. - Be sure to let me know if you already noticed some things you want me to fix, enhance or pay special attention. Of course, you know your work better than anyone so hearing from you is always the best.
I am willing to hear from you soon and please feel free to reach me anytime if you have any further questions.
